First National Workshop on the Establishment of a Transboundary Biosphere Reserve of the Skadar Lake Watershed Held in Podgorica, Montenegro

The First National Workshop was held from 15th to 17th April 2024 in Podgorica, Montenegro. The hosting was made by the project partner Environment Programme (EnvPro). This event marked a significant participative step towards the prestigious UNESCO designation of Man and Biosphere.

The workshop brought together a diverse group of 30 stakeholders from various sectors within Montenegro. These participants, united by their dedication and enthusiasm, worked collaboratively to address the key challenges and strategic issues involved in establishing a transboundary biosphere reserve. The aim is to promote the conservation of biodiversity and the fostering of harmonious relationships between human activities and the natural environment. The workshop’s success is a testament to the collaborative spirit and proactive approach of the SLW – TBR team, which remains steadfast in its mission to resolve any obstacles and move forward with strategic planning. The workshop covered topics of the introduction and understanding of the UNESCO MAB concept, and topics about the scope, conservation values and targets, current use of the area and human wellbeing targets, and ecosystem services. Third day of the workshop was dedicated and concluded with a GAP analysis and identification of potentials and targets for future conservation efforts.

The activity was organized within the project “Skadar/Shkoder Lake Watershed – a Transboundary Biosphere Reserve” which is financially supported by EU through the IPA Cross-border Cooperation Program Montenegro – Albania and implemented by: EDEN center, National Agency of Protected Areas in Albania and EnvPro and National Parks in Montenegro.
